A Few Things from Today

A few things from today...

  • when I go walking, sometimes I will pass by a nearby shopping plaza and when I go by the plaza, I usually stop into the Dollar Tree and stock up on about $10 worth of extra stuff.  With all of the talk about food shortages and supply chain disruptions, I figure it is always good to have extra food and supplies on hand just in case (and if we don't use this stuff after a while, I usually box it up and send it to the Philippines).  Today I stocked up on beans and tuna.
  • from the news...our local water levels have been dropping like crazy and in today's news it was reported that the Colorado River levels may drop so low that the dams on the river may no longer be able to generate power!  Yikes!  I'm trying to get hubby to move but so far he hates the idea.  He will hate summer in the desert without electricity even more!
  • I made a tres leches cake today!  This is the first time I've tried to make it and according to my Mexican neighbors and hubby, it tasted great!  I thought it was ridiculously sugary so if I make it again I might cut back a little on the sugar, especially in the whipped cream.  Also, I forgot to take a picture of the big cake I made before giving it to the neighbor, below is the smaller section I kept for us.

  1. It would be hot here in the South without ac, so I can imagine hot hot it would be in Vegas. Some survivalists turn off all electricity to see how they would fare. Maybe you could suggest that. I wonder if you used less sugar those who like this cake would approve. It looks delicious. Tommy found some navy beans that were expired, thinking I would want to be rid of them. Nope! I will cook them. At least you have a good way to use them before expiration.

    1. I'm not sure which would be worse, no AC here in the desert or no AC in the humid southeast. The humidity really is hard for me to deal with!

  2. I like getting things for a dollar too- but here where I live - the dollar stores are no longer a dollar... I know when we used to go to the USA-loved the 99 cent only store!

    1. We definitely love the 99 Cent store although I just heard on the news that even Dollar Tree is going to be charging more than a dollar for their items starting soon...I guess that is just basic economics. My grandmother mourned the day Five and Dime stores were no longer a thing!

  3. We just sold our winter home in AZ this past April. Had it about 9 yrs & loved it. We sold because of so many things going on out west, the water issue being one of them. Timing was great - sold in 48 hrs for $15K over asking & $200K more than we paid. I'm sure we'll be kicking ourselves come Jan. & the snow is flying!

    1. We have so many snowbird friends who head south during the winter (but selling your house for such an increase is probably a really good financial move!).

    1. Everyone seemed to like it, although it was a little weird for me because it was so wet! I guess drowning the thing in milk/cream/condensed milk will do that but eeekkk
