Day 5 No Spend November

Yesterday hubby ran to the grocery store because we were missing some critical items (bread, milk, vegies) and he spent $21.98.  For his money he got:

  • 3 dozen eggs
  • 5 lbs potatoes
  • 2 lbs carrots
  • 2 bunches of green onions
  • a bag of romaine lettuce
  • a loaf of bread
  • 4 bagels
  • a quart of milk
  • 2 cake mixes
  • a tub of Dryers ice cream
  • 2.6 lb pork
  • 2 bricks of cream cheese
  • a loaf of french bread
  • a head of cabbage
  • 2 bananas
  • .4 pound of green beans

The ads this week were particularly good and there were a lot more items that I wanted to get (lots of baking items like sugar and flour were on sale) but since we are doing the challenge we are only buying necessities and not stocking up no matter how good the prices are.

On another note, we kind of dodged a financial bullet when out of the blue hubby's sister called and said she was in town (his dad had A LOT of kids--like 14 or 15).  He hadn't seen her in fifty years and she was leaving the next day.  Instead of meeting at a restaurant as she suggested (since hubby is the oldest male he would have been kind of required to pay for everyone--it's a Filipino thing) he suggested that we bring them lunch.  So we did some speed cooking and ended up with three main courses and a desert.  We carted the food over to the grand daughter's house where the family was staying (and thank goodness we didn't go out to lunch because there were like 15 people there!) and everyone had a great time eating and reminiscing.

  1. You did great! There have been many times when a family member has asked us to go out to dinner to a place we couldn't really afford. We would usually invite them over for dinner or try to talk them into meeting for pizza which is usually a much more affordable option.

    1. We do this too. We used to take my sister and all her kids to any restaurant they wanted to go to when we visit them. Now it is the local pizza place because it is so much cheaper to feed a group pizza than individual meals!

  2. I live in Ontario and I would have spent $100+ to purchase the same, not sure if your groceries are lower, coupons better but that is an astonishing amount of food for $22. Good for you

  4. The 99 cent store is a God-send--more than half the items came from there. Everything else was on sale. Food prices in Las Vegas are really low compared to Seattle and Connecticut--maybe it's proximity to California?
