On the Grocery Front

We walked over to the grocery store today, mostly because they had boxes of blueberries on sale for 25 cents a box instead of the usual $2.99 (a special if you use their app; each week the app features one ridiculously low-priced item, probably to get people in the store).  We were also able to pick up pork ribs for $1.97 a pound (I've tried to get hubby to go vegan without much luck!) and I was surprised that they even had such low-priced meat in stock because all I have been hearing on the news lately is about meat shortages.  A few of their meat shelves were looking pretty sparse...

...and this is something I have never seen before, our grocery store selling number 10 cans of stuff.  I'm guessing with schools and restaurants closed, the distributor needed somewhere to sell these so they are trying to sell them through grocery stores.

  1. Yes, distributors are trying to think outside the box. I heard today one of Canada's big distributors is going around with grocery trucks with a side panel to neighborhoods that don't have many grocery stores and selling wholesale to the public. You might have to buy a large quantity but you get the savings. This is especially important in the Canadian North where they usually already have a very high cost of living. I noticed 12 packs of toilet today were plentiful at $8.99 a pack. I used to buy them on sale for $4.99 a pack, guess I'll have to get toilet paper at Costco now. Also hand sanitizer 1 litre for $12.99. There was lots on the shelf as they were limiting 1 per person but at that price it wasn't flying off the shelf.

    1. The drive thru trucks is a brilliant idea! I've heard that prices for most goods are higher in Canada, but especially during the pandemic when things are more limited. I'm surprised you guys have hand sanitizer we haven't seen any for about three months now!

  2. I haven't seen the # 10 cans other than in the specialty aisle that have some bulk things, but the way we are going through canned tomatoes, that would be a good deal!

    1. I can definitely see using the giant cans if you have a big family to feed or maybe for bulk cooking/freezing bulk meals.

  3. Most stores these days, even before the virus, carried these cans on an aisle, but now they are on the end caps. That was a great buy for the strawberries! What store is this?

    1. It's a local chain called Albertsons. Every week they have a super special like a dozen eggs for 12 cents which pulls a lot of people into their stores.
