$50 of Groceries

So this is what $50 will buy for groceries in my area.  About five years ago, this grocery haul would have cost around $30 so prices really have gone up over the past several years.  Note that almost all of these items were bought on sale, via the store app, or with a store discount (I rarely buy anything that isn't on sale).  Here's what I bought for $49.44

  • A loaf of French bread
  • 5 lbs potatoes
  • 2 lbs strawberries
  • Ahead of cabbage
  • A broccoli crown
  • 10 pieces of breaded fish
  • A can of coffee
  • 2 cans of tomato paste
  • 4 packets of gravy mix
  • A half pound of sliced ham
  • 2 dozen eggs
  • A bundles of green onions
  • A bundle of cilantro
  • A cucumber
  • 4 bottles of coffee creamer
I'm not sure how this compares to other parts of the country.  Do you think this was a good deal or not?

    1. It seems like produce in the deep south--when we were living there anyway--was much cheaper and much fresher than what we get in our stores here.

  2. Your prices do sound a little bit higher than here. The tomato paste sounds high. I'm not sure what eggs are going for at the store, I buy from a farm and pay 3.00 a dozen. Everything is crazy high and I'm sure it's just going to keep going up.

    1. I wish we could get farm fresh eggs here, they are the best! My niece just started raising chickens for eggs and she is loving it!

  3. Hi, this is Chris who comments sometimes on Sluggy’s blog. Your produce prices are less than where I live in the Midwest. The rest of what you bought is the same or less here.

    1. Interesting. I would think the prices would be cheaper in the midwest as that would be closer to where food is grown/produced.

  4. Yeah - that's not too bad. Depends on if you're buying name-brand, pricey stuff - coffee creamer? Coffee? But still not too bad, IMO.

    1. Pretty much any name brand items we like we only buy when it comes on sale (thus the four coffee creamers instead of one).

  5. I only buy the four produce items after the loaf of bread, so it would be hard for me to judge. We go into the grocery store and are shocked to spend $60 for what seems like a handful of items. Mostly we buy items on sale.

    1. I think a lot of people check and double check their grocery receipts to see exactly how they spent so much money on food that was just recently much cheaper.

  6. Sometimes reader but never commenter, (LOL) I was interested so I took your list and 'bought' it online at my local Walmart Grocery (the cheapest groceries around here). I got to the tomato paste and with tax, hit the $50 limit. So, the gravy, ham, eggs, green onions, cilantro, cucumber and coffee creamer would either have to be put back or left off, or you would have to pay another $32 plus more tax on that. :) So - about $90 for me.

    1. Wow that is interesting to know. I am thinking that with local grocery ads, people could buy $50 worth of sale items in their area and those items may cost much more here.

  7. I'd say on the higher end of what we'd pay, but we don't buy a few of the items (coffee creamer), so those are a bit more expensive & I don't have a good sense of cost.
